These were sent to me as part of a very generous package of seeds and seasonings from PhishIsMyChurch in 2022. The seeds listed here are directly from Phish's seed stock. His largest pod weighed 72g!
The Red Rocoto is a cultivar of c. Pubescens. C. Pubescens is very unlike other domesticated Capsicum species. The stems are covered in minute projections, or hairs. They have a sprawling growth habit, preferring to grow sideways rather than upwards. Curiously, they also prefer cooler climates, and have difficulty setting flowers in high heat. Therefore I would recommend starting these seeds a few weeks earlier than your other species.
The pods themselves are unique; with thick walls and an apple shape profile. When you bite into them, it will be a unique experience. Extremely wet juice pours out of the flesh, and the flesh is curiously soft. I can only describe it as being made up of little pockets of juice, quite similar to how a peeled orange segment looks.
The heat level then comes up a notch, and it really affected my throat!
